If you have a chip or crack in your windshield, it is important to get it repaired as soon as possible, because the damage is not just a cosmetic issue. A small crack can quickly turn into a large one, posing a hazard while driving and making windshield repairs more expensive. Thankfully, small cracks, chips and holes are easily repaired. Here's how.

What are the Steps in the Windshield Repair Process?

1. The Damaged Area is Cleaned

First, your auto glass shop will clean the area around the damage with a glass cleaner and a razor blade. The glass cleaner will remove any dirt or debris, and the razor blade is used to remove any loose shards of glass so that the area is smooth. This step is essential in prepping the area for repair.

2. Resin is Injected in the Crack

Next, a vacuum is used to remove air from the crack or hole in order to ensure the resin will bond correctly with the glass. Once the area has been fully prepped, resin is injected into the damaged area. This material will fill the crack and bond with the glass to create a seal.

3. The Resin is Cured and Removed

Finally, once the resin has been injected, it is cured with ultraviolet light. This process takes about 15 to 30 minutes. Once it has cured, the excess resin is removed by trimming it away with a razor blade, with care taken to avoid damaging the windshield further. Once the excess resin is removed, your windshield is ready to go.
