Selecting your wedding dress can be one of the most exciting decisions during the wedding planning process. There are thousands of wedding dresses and several different styles to choose from, so it’s easy to become overwhelmed. It’s smart to have an idea of the style that you want before you begin shopping. Doing this can take some of the pressure off when you head to the store. Below is a helpful guide to the different types of wedding dress silhouettes to help you find the perfect gown for your big day.

A Guide to Wedding Gown Styles

1. Ball Gown

wedding dressesA ball gown is one of the most classic styles of wedding dresses. It’s often considered to be a “princess style,” because of the way it seems to float regally down the aisle. This style features a tight, slim-fit bodice and a full bell-shaped shirt. This style is very flattering because of the flowing bell shape and tight bodice.

2. Sheath

Sheath wedding dresses are the perfect style for an effortless look, as it requires less fabric than most styles. This silhouette hugs your body and falls straight to the floor, just below your hips. A sheath dress is great for a petite bride because the fabric won’t overwhelm a small frame. Additionally, the fabric creates a lengthening effect that gives a bride an elongated and modern look. Lastly, sheath dresses can come in any type of fabric, making them extremely versatile for all wedding styles.

3. A-Line

A-line dresses can look great on every bride. They are form-fitting in the bodice and gradually flare out to an “A” shape. This dress cut falls right between a ball gown and a sheath cut. This dress style is typically very comfortable, and the fabric flows naturally, as it is usually made from lace or tulle. Additionally, an A-line dress is an extremely versatile look and can be worn for a beach wedding or indoors in an elegant ceremony.

4. Mermaid

For a dress that highlights all of your curves, try on a mermaid-style wedding dress. A mermaid dress is extremely fitted all throughout the bodice and waist of the dress and then flares out mid-thigh. The cut will accentuate your curves, and for a slimmer figure, it can create the illusion of thicker curves. This dress is typically a more flirtatious style and adorned with beading, ruching, or plain satin. No matter the material, your party guests will be in awe.

5. Short or Tea-Length

For a bride who isn’t interested in long, floor-length wedding dresses, a short dress can be a great option. A short dress can range in length but is most commonly a tea-length or knee-length. This style gives you the chance to place focus on your shoes and accessories because they will be more noticeable. This style is also great for a courthouse ceremony or as a second dress after the ceremony. Additionally, this look is great for a destination or cruise wedding.
