Although spring and summer rainstorms can help grass grow, the large volume of water flowing on your gravel driveway could wash away the tiny stones. That's why you need to take steps to prepare driveway materials for inclement weather. Here are a few tips to contain the gravel to keep your investment intact.

How to Prevent Your Gravel Driveway From Washing Out

1. Create Borders

Gravel is more likely to wash away due to water, cars, or foot traffic when there isn't a border around the driveway perimeter. Wooden planks work best as a border along the edge of a straight driveway, while large stones or bricks can help contain gravel on a curved path. Install the border in the area where the gravel meets the surrounding pavement or grass. Just remember to routinely rake the gravel to spread it out within the containment area.

2. Compact the Stones

Loosely-packed gravel isn't stable, which means it could move easily in rainy and windy weather. It's also easier to slip and fall when stones shift underfoot. Compacting the driveway material will help stabilize it to keep it in place. You can use a walk-behind roller, the flat side of a shovel, or a plate compactor to pack the gravel tighter.

3. Put Down Plastic Pavers

To further compress the gravel after you manually compact it, install plastic pavers over the surface. Installed in sheets, the plastic pavers feature cell-like openings. The gravel is contained within these openings to keep movement minimal.
