Summer brings extended daylight hours and plenty of sunshine. The boost of sunlight makes for beautiful days, but can affect hardwood floors over time. If your home has this type of flooring, these simple tips will help you keep them in top condition.

How to Maintain Hardwood Floors During the Summer

1. Cover Windows

Ultraviolet (UV) rays can fade the flooring, so limiting exposure protects the color. Close the curtains when you aren’t home and in rooms you don’t use. You can also install awnings or protective films on glass fixtures to block UV rays even when the shades are open.

2. Move Objects Around

3. Run the AC

Extreme heat and humidity can cause wood to warp. Though hardwood floors are durable, extended exposure to these elements may cause premature wear.

Run your AC throughout the season to keep the home at a cooler temperature and reduce humidity from the air. Keep the unit on when you leave the house as well.

4. Use Floor Mats

Many people enjoy spending time outdoors in the summer. If you work in the garden or have a pool, protect the flooring from water, dirt, and debris that can scratch and stain the surface. Place floor mats at each doorway and ask people to remove their shoes before walking into the house.
