If you are thinking about having a swimming pool installed, there are many decisions to make. In addition to the pool’s location, size, and design, you need to consider the safety elements. Pool safety is especially important for children, since drowning is, unfortunately, a common risk. To ensure your pool is safe for little children, review the following suggestions.

How to Make a Swimming Pool Safe For Children

1. Schedule a Fence Installation

Solid fencing creates a private swimming pool oasis that is off-limits to children unless adults are present. You can also have thick hedges that surround the pool. No matter what you select, your pool should include a locking gate that children–neighborhood or otherwise–cannot breach. Pools are considered “attractive nuisances” to neighborhood kids who do not understand the dangers involved. Most counties and municipalities require pool owners to install fences for this reason.

2. Do Not Leave Pool Toys in the Water

Floating, brightly colored pool toys can entice children to jump in after them. Ensure your swimming pool is toy-free after every splash session to sidestep this risk. You’ll also want to collect toys around the edge of the pool that can become tripping hazards, as well as any pool tools or shoes. Make it clear to the kids that toys and swimming in general happen only when you or at least one other adult is present.

3. Keep Pool Chemicals and Supplies Locked Away

Curious children can accidentally injure themselves while “playing” with pool supplies. They can also accidentally poison themselves by tasting or drinking pool chemicals, or sustain related burns. Keep all pool supplies and chemicals in a locked container, such as a weatherproof outdoor storage container or supply closet in the garage.

4. Invest in a Pool Alarm

Pool alarms alert owners when someone is near the swimming space. Depending on the alarm model, it detects activity either by a disrupted light beam or waves in the pool. Keep this alarm active as long as your pool is open. Once the season ends, use a heavy pool cover to prevent kiddie activity.
