The blower motor is the part of a furnace that pushes air throughout the home. Like any component, it can wear down over time due to buildup or friction, which may cause it to overheat and eventually fail. To prevent a heating emergency in the middle of winter, call for repairs if you notice any of these signs.

How to Tell Your Furnace Blower Motor Is Overheating

1. Burning Smells

A burning smell from the vents isn't always a cause for alarm. If the problem only occurs for a few minutes when you first turn the system on at the start of winter, it could simply be dust burning off the components. However, the blower motor may be running hot. If it doesn’t stop or you notice it after the furnace has been in use for more than a few days, call for an inspection.

2. Loud Noises

Furnaces make subtle swooshing or humming noises when they cycle. If you notice this noise getting louder or more high-pitched, though, it may be that the blower motor is under additional strain. This sometimes occurs due to age, or it could be that the air filter or vents are blocked and causing the motor to work harder than necessary.

The longer this occurs, the more excess heat the motor produces, so it's wise to call for service right away. The HVAC technician will assess the ductwork and air filter as well.

3. Lack of Heat

Many furnaces have safeguards in place to prevent overheating. If the blower mower gets too hot, the cycle may shut down and force you to reset the system before starting up again. If you’re dealing with a sudden lack of heat or needing to restart your furnace regularly, there’s likely an overheating issue somewhere in the system. The blower motor is one of the most common spots for this issue to occur, though your contractor may also check the evaporator coil and fan.
