Microneedling is an anti-aging treatment in which a series of tiny sterile needles puncture the skin to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. The small, painless needles encourage the production of collagen, a protein that improves skin elasticity, and helps the skin better absorb cosmetic products. Below, learn more about this process to see if it's right for you.

Benefits

Studies have found that microneedling is both safe and effective when used to improve skin appearance. It works by subjecting the uppermost layer of skin to a trace amount of minor injury, which compels the deeper layers of skin to produce fresh tissue rich in collagen.

This new tissue has a brighter, more even texture and tone. The microneedling device opens up the pores, allowing for improved absorption of skin care products, which in turn makes these products more effective. Microneedling can also be used to reduce or eliminate stretch marks and acne scars.

Procedure

You will lay back and relax while the provider runs the microneedling tool over your face. They might first apply a topical numbing agent to ensure your comfort, but most people report that the treatment feels no more intense than a piece of sandpaper against the skin. The procedure typically takes about 30 minutes.

anti-aging treatmentsIn general, you can resume normal daily activities afterward. You might be asked to wait several hours before washing your face. Some peeling and flaking are to be expected over the coming days. This is a sign that cells are regenerating and new tissue is growing.

Suitability

Microneedling is a popular anti-aging treatment. However, if you have a breakout of fresh pimples or a cold sore, you may want to wait until after these issues have abated. Also, avoid microneedling if you're allergic to the topical anesthetic the provider uses.
