Planning a funeral for a baby is an extremely emotional experience. Many parents aren’t sure where to begin. Here’s some information regarding when and how to hold a service that honors your child.

When to Hold the Service

Most funeral services for infants occur within two to three weeks of their passing. However, you can wait longer if you wish. It’s important to take all the time you need to plan a service that feels right for you and your baby.

Planning Tips

funeralWhen planning the service, there are some specific areas you may want to consider. This will make sure that the ceremony goes smoothly and honors your child in the way that you see fit.

Size

Some parents prefer larger services with lots of family and friends in attendance. Others would rather have a smaller, more private service. When deciding on the size, think about what type of environment would make you most comfortable.

Children

Parents who have other children must decide whether the kids will attend the service. If you don’t want your children there because you feel they’re not emotionally ready or for any other reason, leave them with a trusted caregiver.

If they do attend, explain what will happen at the service so that they feel prepared. Some children may want to take part in the ceremony by lighting candles, reading a special poem, or engaging in another activity that’s meaningful to your family.

Religion

You may want to ask a religious leader to lead the ceremony. You should also think about any faith-based funeral traditions and whether you want to incorporate them into the service. If you’re non-religious, you could ask a close family member or friend, a funeral director, or an independent celebrant to lead the ceremony.
