Whether you plan to outfit a home or barn with metal siding, this material is a durable and long-lasting choice that generally doesn't require much maintenance. However, it will accumulate dirt, debris, and other contaminants over time, which means you should clean it once or twice a year to ensure the structure looks nice. Below are several strategies to follow if you want to restore the exterior of your building.

How Can You Wash Metal Siding Properly?

1. Prepare the Walls

First, shut off any electric breakers to the area you’re washing, as this prevents wires from short-circuiting. Next, use a long-handled brush and warm water to scrub the exterior. This helps loosen any dirt that might be sticking to the surface, allowing you to remove it easily. If you spot any areas with mold or moss growth, create a mixture of 1 part bleach to 3 parts water and use a spray bottle to apply it thoroughly. This will kill the microorganisms and prevent them from spreading.

2. Choose Your Cleaning Chemicals

Metal siding requires special care because products designed for wood or vinyl siding can can corrode the metal, increasing the risk of damage and leaks. If you do not have a specialized cleanser, a nontoxic, liquid laundry detergent can also work. Mix about 1/3 of a cup of detergent with six gallons of water to make the cleaning solution. Avoid other types of soap that foam too much, such as dish soap, as these products may stick to the siding after the wash.

3. Use a Power Washer

While a power washer can damage vinyl and wood planks, you can use this device to clean metal siding because it is more durable. On the first pass, use a low pressure setting to apply the cleaning solution. Then, use clean water and a higher setting to rinse the soap and get rid of the buildup. Start at the top so that the debris from dirty areas doesn’t wash toward clean surfaces. Use smooth horizontal strokes to prevent streaks. If the ground starts getting muddy or oversaturated, take a break to let it dry.
