Metal siding is durable, affordable, and extremely popular with homeowners. However, it requires occasional maintenance to keep it looking its best. To help you do that, below are some tips for keeping your siding clean.

What Are Some Tips for Cleaning Metal Siding?

1.  Switch Off Outdoor Breakers

Water, metal, and electricity can be a dangerous combination. For safety's sake, before you start, turn off the breakers supplying electricity to any outdoor lighting fixtures or outlets. This will help you avoid electric shock.

2. Use a Deck Brush

The next step is to loosen dirt with a long—or telescoping—handle deck brush. This lets you reach areas that might otherwise require a ladder. Choose a brush with soft bristles so you don't leave scratches.

Moisten the siding with the hose. If you notice mold or mildew growth, apply a 1:3 solution of household bleach and water. Let it hose water and the bleach solution soak for five minutes. Then scrub siding with the brush, first vertically and then horizontally, to remove stuck-on grime.

3. Use a Power Washer

A power washer applies too much pressure to use safely on wood or vinyl siding, which it could damage or gouge. However, metal siding is sturdy enough to withstand the spray if you limit the washer to low or medium pressure.

Also, adjust the nozzle so that the spray is fan-shaped rather than linear. This provides enough pressure to clean the siding but prevents it from marking the surface.

4. Consider Natural Cleaners

If you prefer to avoid bleach and other chemical household cleaners, you have natural alternatives that are equally effective. For instance, a 1:3 solution of vinegar to water makes for a strong but environmentally-friendly cleanser.

Hydrogen peroxide is a natural bleach replacement. Moreover, a gallon of warm water mixed with borax, a white mineral found in many alkaline salt deposits, creates an antiseptic that kills mold and mildew.
