3 Types of Lifeboats Seen on Ships

1. Open Lifeboat

The open lifeboat does not have a cover and is typically powered by oars. Some models, however, have a compression ignition engine to navigate the seas swiftly.

The appointed captain of these lifeboats should have completed a boating safety course so that they can obey the rules of the water and keep passengers safe. Because safety requirements have evolved, you’re more likely to find these open lifeboats on older vessels. 

2. Closed Lifeboat

Closed lifeboats are widely used on ships and offer full coverage to protect passengers against the elements. Some are fully enclosed, while others feature windows.

They’re watertight and are therefore considered safer than open lifeboats for navigating rough seas and strong winds. Plus, these lifeboats have the unique ability to return to an upright position if they topple over.

3. Freefall Lifeboat

Freefall lifeboats have many of the same features as closed lifeboats, with the exception of their launching style. As their name suggests, these vessels are primed for a “freefall” off the edge of a ship should an evacuation ever be necessary.

With their aerodynamic structure, they can hit the water without sustaining damage. Like any watercraft, however, they should be operated by someone who has completed a boating safety course, if possible.
