With spring in full swing, it’s time to get your gardening projects underway. Planting flowers and vegetables is an excellent way to spruce up your curb appeal, and it will allow you to get outside and enjoy the sunshine. However, before you start, make sure you’re planting the right varieties. Knowing which plants thrive best in the Ohio climate is instrumental to your garden’s success. Here are a few suggested plants to add to your landscape.

Ohio Spring Garden Guide

Annuals

Annual plants only bloom during summer but offer an inexpensive solution for adding bold pops of color to your yard. Some of the best performing annuals in Ohio include:

Marigolds: These can be enjoyed for about 80-90 days. They love the sun and tolerate heat and neglect well. They are ideal edging plants and grow easily from seeds.

Petunias: This is an old favorite that has become new again due to all the available hybrids. They bloom all summer long and are low maintenance.

Gerbera Daisy: These produce a beautiful bloom that lasts approximately six weeks. They prefer full sun and well-drained soil with even moisture but can withstand drying out a bit.

Perennials

gardeningPerennials flower at varying times and some are just foliage, but they return year after year unlike annuals.. When making your gardening plans, consider including the following choices:

Hostas: Planting these will instantly add a unique touch of elegance to your property. They offer lush foliage, are easy to care for, and come in numerous varieties.

Blanket Flower: These are vibrant red and orange daisy-like flowers. They bloom from summer into late fall and are drought tolerant. They also attract butterflies.

Peonies: This flourishing and fragrant flower has been around for decades and remains a top choice among gardeners. They like full sun and well-drained soil.

Vegetables

Ohio vegetable gardening is ideal in spring. A few options to think about are:

Squash: This is one of the easiest vegetables to grow, regardless of the variety. They should be spread out, as they tend to take over, and be given plenty of water.

Carrots: These root vegetables do well in the early part of the season. The soil must be properly prepared before planting, removing rocks and adding an additive to allow for straighter growth.

Beans: This is a pod plant that does well from May to September. Bean seeds grow best once all the frost is gone and are ideal for limited spaces, as they can grow up a trellis or pole.

And, of course, the old stand-by selections: Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Peppers and many more.
