Your coffee table is the finishing touch to the living room that all your other furniture is based around, so it needs to be just right for the space. Consider these factors to make it functional and visually balance the room.

A Guide to Finding the Right Coffee Table

1. Size

Shop for your table by length, so it complements your sofa. The ideal table is about two-thirds the length of the sofa; this allows you to move around it while being long enough that people seated at either end can use it. If you have two sofas, measure the longer one.

2. Shape

honolulu furnitureMost coffee tables are rectangular to match the length of the average sofa with a loveseat or chair at the ends. However, there are situations when you may want a different shape.

If you have sofas or chairs of the same length, for example, use a square table to fill the space in the middle.

If you have other furniture in the center space, such as an ottoman, you’ll want a similarly shaped and sized table to complement it.

A circular table suits smaller rooms. It leaves you with more walking room and makes the room feel larger by drawing the eye outward. If you have a circular area rug, match it with a circular table.

3. Height

Measure the top of the cushions on your sofa or chairs. The tabletop should be the same height or one inch shorter. If your sofa has a height of 18 inches, for example, your table can be between 17 and 18 inches tall. This keeps the table from towering over the other furniture while making it easy to reach items on the table from a seated position.
