With the intensity and focus required for gaming, it's not uncommon for your body mechanics to be affected. One of the biggest areas of concern is posture, largely because so much of practicing or competing is spent in the seated position. The right posture will keep you safer, more comfortable, and better able to game longer. Here are a few tips for improving your posture without sacrificing your skill or edge.

A Gamer's Guide to Posture

1. Sit in a Supportive Chair

Many gamers sit on couches, easy chairs, or the floor, but these options don't provide sufficient postural support. Sit in a chair with a back at a 100- to 135-degree angle. Your feet should reach the floor and rest flat against it, with your knees bent at a 90-degree angle.

If there is a headrest, use it as much as possible. This will create an ergonomic framework for supporting your posture and comfort.

2. Maintain a Healthy Monitor Height & Distance

The monitor or screen should be at a height that allows your eyes to rest on the top third of the screen when you look straight ahead. This prevents hunching the neck and shoulders and curling the spine, all of which contribute to poor posture.

Also, the monitor or screen should be at least 20 inches, or one arm's length, away from you at all times. Your posture will be more stable, and you'll be minimizing eye strain.

3. Rest Your Arms

With some moves, it's virtually impossible not to shift your arms. But try to use the chair's armrest as much as possible, with your arms bent at a 90-degree angle. Every time you move your arms, the muscles in the shoulders and neck move too, which can exacerbate posture issues. Aim to place your arms gently on the armrests to avoid straining the forearms.
