Orchids have been a part of traditional lei-making for over 200 years. They’re common celebratory gestures gifted during graduations, weddings, birthdays, and anniversaries. Making one yourself takes skill, but it becomes easier with practice. Here’s a closer look at the basic steps to get you started.

4 Steps to Using Orchids in Lei Making

1. Gather Your Materials

The first item you’ll need is an embroidery needle that measures approximately 6 to 14 inches in length. This will make it easier to thread the lei and reduce the risk of damage. Next is a sturdy twine or thread that won’t break under tension. Check that it’s not too thick to avoid splitting the delicate petals.

Finally, you’ll need about 100 orchid flowers to complete a standard lei. Dendrobiums are the most popular, while vandas are ideal for fancier designs. You can select a single color or use various hues to make it stand out.

2. Prepare the Petals

Once you’ve gathered all the essential tools, you will want to rehydrate the petals to keep them looking fresh. Cut the stems from the back of the flowers and soak them in clean water for about five minutes. Spread them out to dry for about 20 minutes, as moisture increases the fragility of the flowers.

3. String the Needle

Measure a piece of twine that’s approximately 3 to 4 feet in length. If you want to make a double lei, gather a string that’s about 80 inches long and fold it in half. Cut it and knot one end to keep the flowers from falling off while working.

4. Add the Flowers

To begin creating the garland, pierce an orchid from the back with the needle, bringing it through the center. For a double lei, aim for the side of the flower so that it faces outward from the twine. Gently slide it down until it reaches the knot, repeating the process until most of the flowers are strung. Remove the string from the needle and tie both ends together in three knots to prevent them from unraveling.
