Having a garbage disposal is an added bonus for many homeowners, making for an easier clean-up and less smelly garbage containers. However, there can be a thin line between convenience and a cause for appliance repair. That's why it's important to know how to properly care for your garbage disposal, including knowing what's better suited for the trash.

What Foods to Not Put in the Garbage Disposal

1. Pasta

As is evident from its consistency before and after it's boiled, pasta expands in water, which can pose a problem for a garbage disposal that's regularly exposed to warm water. Instead, either compost or dispose of pasta in the trash. But a little pasta down the garbage disposal won't destroy it. Just don't make a habit out of it, and run cold water after it to ensure the noodles don't expand and cause a clog.

2. Bones or Pits

While a garbage disposal is known for its power to rid your sink of any unwanted excess and leftover food, its durability can't withstand everything. Harder food remnants, such as bones or pits, can diminish or damage the garbage disposal's blades. Instead, utilizing a compost or a regular trash receptacle will protect your disposal from appliance repair.

3. Eggshells

Since they're so thin and fragile, it might seem fine to put eggshells down the garbage disposal. However, the thin clear or white membrane that so often stays behind after you crack an egg can damage the system. That can get stuck to the blades, making it difficult for them to break down food properly, which can cause a blockage or worse, a need for appliance repair. If eggshells are rinsed to remove the membrane, they're safer to put down the disposal, but there's always a risk that some will be left behind.
