Tooth decay, also known as a cavity, is perhaps the most common dental issue among both adults and children. Left untreated, cavities can lead to serious infections and even tooth loss. Fortunately, there are plenty of warning signs before the decay progresses this far. Reach out to a dentist right away if you experience the following early symptoms of a cavity.

How to Tell When You Have Cavities

1. A Hole in Your Tooth

If you look closely, you might be able to see the cavity. It starts as a small white spot on the top of the tooth. As the tooth decay continues, a tiny hole or pit forms. Give yourself a brief dental examination every so often, after brushing or flossing. Any spots or holes should be reported to your dentist. Even if you don’t spot them, your dentist will be able to find any developing cavities using a dental tool called a sickle probe.

2. Dental Sensitivity or Pain

General dental sensitivity and unexplained toothaches are telltale signs of tooth decay. It can range from a mild, dull ache to severe pain. This discomfort may be more noticeable when you consume hot, cold, sweet, sticky, or acidic foods and beverages. You might feel a sharp pain when you bite down or apply pressure.

Sensitivity and pain occur because the decay has eaten through your enamel, the tooth’s outer protective layer, and made its way down to the dentin of your teeth. This layer contains microscopic tubules, hollow canals that lead to the tooth's pulp. This innermost layer of the tooth is full of sensitive nerves and blood vessels. Dental pain can come from problems other than cavities, so it is important to consult your dentist so they can determine the root cause.

3. Persistent Bad Breath

Bad breath, or halitosis, happens to most people at some point in their lives. The causes can be as harmless as a meal with garlic and onions, or as serious as gum disease. A persisting unpleasant smell or taste may be a sign of a cavity. Cavities are an infection of the tooth, which accumulates odor-releasing bacteria and food particles.
