Irrigation systems run automatically according to preprogrammed settings, which prompt them to deliver moisture to lawns and landscapes. This can make it easy and convenient to keep your outdoor areas hydrated, healthy, and beautiful. However, you might occasionally notice issues that prevent the sprinklers from functioning normally. Here are a few common issues and how a professional contractor can resolve them.

4 Common Sprinkler Problems

1. Broken Heads

Sprinkler heads are rotary nozzles that pop up from the earth and spray a stream of water over the yard. However, if they become damaged by foot traffic, lawn equipment, or heavy machinery, they may warp or crack, preventing them from delivering moisture in a uniform stream.

If the rising mechanisms become damaged, the heads might fail to pop out of the ground when the system runs. A landscape contractor can inspect the heads and risers and replace any damaged components to restore operation and proper watering.

2. Skipping Zones

Since lawns and landscaping beds might have different watering needs, irrigation systems allow you to program sprinklers to deliver specific amounts of moisture to separate zones. If the system completely skips a zone, this may occur due to an improperly installed valve that allows backflow to enter the main water line. When this happens, backflow may push against the fresh water, preventing the latter from flowing through the sprinklers.

Additionally, skipping can occur when a suction leak in the pump lining inhibits water from flowing through the lines leading to the skipped zone. A contractor may reinstall the valve so that it sits at the highest point in the system, preventing backflow and allowing fresh water to move to the heads. Alternatively, they can replace a pump with damaged lining to correct a suction leak.

3. Faulty Controller

The controller activates and deactivates the system. It also controls the amount of time your sprinklers run. If you can't turn on the power or the system waters the lawn for the wrong amount of time, this may stem from an electrical issue caused by faulty wiring or worn relays. A landscape company can repair frayed wires or replace old relays to ensure the controller has enough voltage to operate.

4. Buzzing Pump

Sprinkler pumps move water from your home supply and through the heads at a consistent pressure. If you notice a buzzing sound near the main water line, this may occur when the relay switch becomes oxidized due to exposure to humidity and air.

When this happens, the relay will buzz as it struggles to pull voltage to operate the pump. A contractor can replace the relay to stop the noise and ensure the pump pushes water through the system.
