When most people think of furnace filters, they think of the air filter that goes in the return vent to trap dust, dander, and pollen. While changing this filter is certainly important, furnaces that use home heating oil typically also have one between the oil burner and the oil line that's designed to remove contaminants from the fuel. Here's what you should know about changing this filter.

Why Should You Change Your Furnace's Oil Filter?

The oil filter is designed to keep dirt, moisture, and other contaminants that may be present in the supply out of the fuel system. This keeps the furnace’s pump and fuel nozzle from getting clogged, an issue that can cause significant damage or completely shut down the system.

Changing the home heating oil filter can significantly improve the reliability and energy efficiency of the furnace. A furnace that runs smoothly and efficiently experiences less wear and tear, making its internal components less likely to break down. As such, filter replacements will ultimately save you money by reducing repair and heating expenses.

How Do You Change the Filter?

To change the oil filter, you must first turn off the furnace’s electricity and oil supply. Most oil filters are covered by a detachable base. Unscrew the base from the oil supply line and throw away the old filter. Use a cloth to clean out any sludge buildup within the canister before placing the new filter cartridge into the canister base.

After screwing the canister back in place, loosen the bleeder screw to remove any air from the filter. Turn on the oil to push out the air, then retighten the bleeder screw and turn the electricity to the furnace back on.
