As a hair stylist, the key to beautiful transformations is in learning the care needs for your clients’ specific types of hair. By informing your clients about how to properly care for their unique hair type, you’ll ensure fantastic styling results every time they come in. Each type has uniquely different requirements, but this guide will help you make the best hair care recommendations for your clients.

4 Types of Hair & How to Manage Them

1. Straight Hair

Long hair comes in all variations of thickness and texture, and it tends to become oily faster than other types. This means it should be washed more frequently. In between washes, it may also be necessary to use dry shampoo to combat the greasy texture that can develop.

2. Wavy Hair

Wavy hair is thicker and more luxurious than straight hair. While this can be an advantage in terms of trying new styles, this type is more likely to become frizzy. Combat this situation by using shampoos and conditioners that have been engineered to both moisturize and hydrate thick hair. Apply styling mousse to damp hair and work it in from the roots to the tips to help trap in moisture. Adding a finishing cream when it’s almost dry can also help eliminate frizz.

3. Curly Hair

Hydrating shampoos and conditioners should be used, but other hair products such as mousses and creams will help hair stylists manage it better. A light hair oil may be sufficient to improve manageability. After applying the oil, brush out the curls with a wet brush and blow dry.

4. Kinky or Very Curly Hair

Very curly hair is coarser than other types. This makes it more sensitive to temperature and humidity. Trapping moisture in is especially important with this hair type. In addition to selecting hydrating shampoos and conditioners, instruct your clients to use a moisturizing hair mask with every washing. Oils, creams, and gels can also help keep the moisture in.
