When you were little, did your parents ever tell you to stop crossing your eyes because they might get stuck that way? Or that you shouldn't read in dim light because it’ll ruin your vision? These are perhaps two of the most pervasive eye care myths passed down from generation to generation. Here are a few other common misconceptions about vision.

What Are Some Myths About Eye Care?

1. Sitting Too Close to the TV Will Damage Your Vision

This is something parents often tell their children when they find them sitting on the floor in front of the TV rather than on the couch. You may have even said it to your own kids. In reality, though, sitting too close to the TV will not damage your vision. It can, however, cause eyestrain. Staring at any kind of digital screen for an extended period of time can make the eyes tired and dry.

2. Wearing Glasses Will Make Your Eyes Weaker

eye careThe idea that corrective eyewear will weaken vision further is one of the most widely believed myths. There are two main reasons why people believe this misconception, especially if they just got their first pair of glasses or contact lenses. First, they attribute their gradual decline in vision to their new eyeglasses or contacts when in reality their condition was going to worsen regardless. Second, they get used to seeing objects so clearly that everything seems even blurrier when they remove their corrective eyewear.

3. Only Those Who Wear Corrective Eyewear Need to See an Optometrist

Even if you have 20/20 vision, you should still undergo regular eye exams, especially if you’re at risk for conditions like glaucoma or diabetic retinopathy. Many eye diseases don't manifest any symptoms until they've reached a fairly advanced stage, which is why periodic exams are an essential component of preventive care.

As you age, the frequency of your visits should increase. If you’re between 20 and 39, for example, you may only need to visit an optometrist every two to five years. If you’re over 65, on the other hand, your optometrist may want to see you once a year.
