Propane is highly efficient and affordable, making it the ideal fuel source for forklifts, portable heaters, and generators. It’s also extremely safe–but, like any gas, propane should be handled carefully. If you’re using this fuel at your job site or commercial location, here are a few tips for keeping your crew and customers safe.

4 Safety Tips for Propane

1. Keep Workspaces Ventilated

Only use propane in spaces with adequate ventilation. Doing so will keep any gas emissions from becoming highly concentrated. Propane is colorless and odorless, so a rotten egg smell is added to help alert users to a leak. A carbon monoxide detector can provide added peace of mind and alert employees if the propane is not burning completely. Incomplete combustion can occur if there is an incorrect connection. Detectors should be checked on a regular basis to confirm proper function.

2. Use Caution

Because propane is flammable, never smoke or have open flames near areas where propane is used or stored. As well, any employees working directly with propane should wear protective clothing to prevent burns to the skin.

3. Keep the Area Around the Devices Clear

propanePropane heaters and generators require good ventilation. Equipment, tools, and other supplies stacked around the appliance disrupt airflow. By keeping the immediate vicinity around equipment clear, you can assure proper operation and gain quick access in case of an emergency.

Likewise, non-stationary equipment that runs on propane should have similar space requirements. For example, a forklift used in warehouses should have a clear pathway to operate safely.

4. Have a Safety Plan in Place

Before using propane-fueled equipment, create an evacuation plan, appoint someone to handle emergencies, and confirm your employees know what to do if they smell propane. The staff should exit the area immediately. Do not use cell phones or turn light switches on or off. Once at a safe distance, have the appointed individual call your propane distributor to report the leak.
