Providing excellent ground speed advantages, lower fuel costs, and consistent power, propane forklifts provide pricing and efficiency benefits that frequently outweigh other energy sources. But with hundreds of thousands of propane-fueled forklifts in operation and many experienced forklift operators nearing retirement, safety awareness and training are more important than ever. While safety training should be performed through your forklift manufacturer's operator safety training courses, you can begin with this quick guide to safely replace your forklift's tank.

How to Change Your Forklift Propane Tank in 3 Steps

1. Remove Empty Cylinder

Park the forklift in a designated safe area, ensuring the parking brake is engaged and the engine is turned off. Close the propane cylinder's service valve by turning it clockwise. To disconnect the female quick-connect fitting, turn it counterclockwise. Lastly, disengage the toggle clamp that holds the cylinder and remove the empty cylinder from the forklift.

2. Inspect Replacement Cylinder

propaneTo ensure good working use, be sure to inspect your full propane cylinder before installing it on your forklift. Keep an eye out for any rust, dents, or gouges that might be present, and take a careful moment to inspect it for odors (such as that of a rotten egg), hissing noises, or frost that can sometimes indicate a gas leak. Apply a mixture of soap and water to the cylinder if you suspect a leak. The mixture will produce bubbles at the leak point if present.

Ensure the pressure relief valve is secure and fits approximately 180 degrees from the forklift's locating pin. Check for liquid service valve defects and confirm that the filler valve dust cap is in place.

3. Install Replacement Cylinder

After thoroughly inspecting your replacement cylinder, you're ready to install it. First, ensure the forklift's locating pin is inserted through the locating pinhole on the cylinder's collar. Reconnect the toggle clamp before ensuring the propane hose is free of chafes or cuts and the gasket is properly installed before tightening the male and female quick-connect fittings.

Once secured, slowly open the liquid service valve by turning it counterclockwise, being mindful of any leaks that may be present. Confirm the cylinder is properly secured and the hose and cylinder don't extend beyond the forklift's rear or sides before starting the engine.

Be sure to store the empty cylinder in a cage—or standing straight up—to prevent any damage from occurring.
