1. Avoid Flare-Ups

When you use a propane grill, a fuel line will run a small amount of gas to an ignition switch that creates a spark, generating a continuous stream of even flames. These flames heat the grates, creating beautiful sear marks and allowing the body of the food to be cooked and caramelized by the flames. Unfortunately, grease and heavy marinades can sometimes generate a small fire called a flare-up.

Flare-ups are undesirable because they can cook the food in that spot in an instant while simultaneously charring the exterior. To avoid flare-ups, don’t put grease or oil on the grill, and try not to cook burgers with a high fat content. Stay away from sugary marinades that could smoke and catch on fire. Additionally, preheat the grill to a higher temperature and lower it for ongoing cooking. If flare-ups do occur, move the food to a cooler part of the grill and extinguish the flames by closing the lid. 

2. Keep the Grates Clean

Food can stick to hot grates as you grill. If these bits of food aren’t removed, they can create an undesirable char that transfers to other food in the future. Over time, charred bits can also fall down into the grill, interfere with ignition, and make it difficult for the system to cook evenly.

3. Keep a Backup Tank

When preparing dinner for others, you don’t want to encounter a tank that’s almost empty. Always store an extra tank just in case you end up cooking for a long time or miss the fact that your tank’s running low.
