The Worldwide Uchinanchu Festival happens every five years, encouraging people from around the globe with Okinawan roots to celebrate their heritage and the Okinawan chimugukuru (spirit). Whether you’re planning on joining an Okinawa tour or simply want to make the festival part of your next travel adventure, learn more about it here. The event is currently slated for October 2022.

Things to Do

There are many ways to dazzle your senses at this premier four-day festival. Attend the parade where Okinawans walk down the famous Kokusai-dori street laughing, smiling, waving, and carrying “Welcome Home!” signs. The Opening and Closing Ceremonies are available in Japanese, English, and Portuguese and celebrate the festival and its people. Check out the food stands surrounding the stadium to sample authentic fare. The opening and closing festivities also feature live music and fireworks.

Take in traditional Okinawan performances in the city of Naha, which include buyo (odori or dance) exhibitions,  karate and kobudo exhibitions and drumming competitions. Village parties abound as well, where you can meet other overseas travelers while savoring awamori and traditional food.

Planning Tips

Before the festival, you'll need to register for a Taikai pass. Once you receive the pass for festival entry, wear it everywhere, whether you’re on an Okinawa tour or walking around Naha. It will get you into most festival events.

Learn how to kachashi if you want to participate in dance parties throughout the city as well as a few common Uchinaaguchi, or Okinawa language, phrases as a courtesy to event volunteers and attendees. If you plan on exploring outside the city, rent a car to come and go as you please. If you're staying in Naha during the festival, learn about public transportation options, such as the local bus and monorail (Yui Rail). A Taikai pass provides special discounts if you’re an international traveler.
