Whether you're a foodie or just appreciate a good meal, traveling offers opportunities to experience regional cuisines. As part of your vacation planning, take time to learn about the dishes your destination is known for and put together a list of the foods you want to try. Here are a few additional tips to help you eat like a local.
How to Eat Like a Local When You're on Vacation
1. Learn Some Basic Vocabulary
If you're not adept in the language of the region you're visiting, take the time to learn some simple words. This will make it easier to order food and communicate any dietary preferences or restrictions. It's also a sign of respect for the culture, and locals will appreciate it. Watch language instruction videos, purchase a translation guide, and download a translation app to your phone.
2. Visit Convenience Stores & Supermarkets
Convenience stores and supermarkets are ideal places for visitors to introduce themselves to a region's food. In Japan, convenience stores are known as combinis, and they carry a diverse selection of local, homemade foods, such as bento boxes, gyoza, and premade noodles. You can purchase a few items at the store to eat at your hotel. Also, walk the aisles and write down the names of ingredients or dishes that catch your eye. Then, when you visit a restaurant, see if they're on the menu.
3. Look for Crowded Restaurants
To truly experience a region like locals do, go to restaurants that draw a large crowd. If a place is busy, there's a good chance the food is fresh. If people are willing to wait for a table or stand in line, the menu is almost certainly tasty.
