While COVID-19 has put much of the tourism industry on hold, that doesn’t mean your dreams of a Japan tour can’t be achieved. In fact, now is the perfect time to plan for future travels. On a trip to Tokyo, you’ll need to have a general understanding of the city’s massive public transportation system. Use this brief guide to get introduced to their subways, trains, and buses.

Subways

Subways are the main mode of travel for Tokyo travelers and residents alike. This complex network of stops and lines can be divided into two main categories: the Tokyo Metro and the Toei Subways. Both of the systems are interconnected, and you can access them with a subway pass or prepaid card.

If you’ll be doing plenty of sightseeing, opt for the Tokyo Combination Ticket, which allows for unlimited use of the Toei and Tokyo Metro subways, as well as public trains and buses. Otherwise, you can purchase a one-day ticket for either of the subway systems.

Trains

In addition to subways, there are two train lines commonly used by Tokyo tourists. You may hear the JR Yamanote Line referred to as the “Loop Line” since it creates a circle around the central part of the city. If you’re trying to get to the other side of town fast, hop on the JR Chuo Line, which runs east to west across Tokyo.

The trains can also be easily accessed with a prepaid card, or you can buy one-off tickets at the JR east ticket office. If you choose either the trains or the subways, try to plan your trip so you don’t need to catch a ride during rush hour. Between 7:30 and 9:30 a.m., as well as 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., these stations can be hectic and overwhelming for non-residents.

Buses

While the subways and trains are most common, you can also take the bus around Tokyo. For public buses, it’s best to pay with a prepaid Pasmo or Suica card, which you swipe as you board. Alternatively, you can buy a One-Day Bus Pass from a bus driver or at the Toei bus office.

When riding the bus, look up your stop ahead of time. When you’re approaching it, press the button on the side or ceiling of the bus near your seat to let the driver know you need to get off.
