Developing a good swing is a fundamental aspect of excelling at golf. Whether you're new to the sport or a seasoned player, how well you swing has a major impact on where the ball ends up, and where you land on the leaderboard. Here are a few tips to hone your skills and ensure your next game is a resounding success.

Do:

Grip the club correctly.

Holding the club with your fingers instead of your palm will give you more control over it, which can greatly improve the quality of your swing. Also, be mindful of how tightly you're holding the club. While a firm grip is important, holding it too tightly creates unnecessary tension.

Adjust your posture.

When gearing up to swing, make sure your knees are slightly bent and that your feet are positioned about a shoulder's width apart. Bend at the waist, but keep your back as straight as possible. Arms should be loose, not rigid, as you grip the club. Also, try to alleviate tension elsewhere in the body for a fluid strike.

Don't:

Put a curve on the ball.

In general, you want your swing path and the direction the club is facing to be the same. When these two factors are at odds, you're more likely to slice the ball, meaning you will hit it on a curve. There are lots of things that can cause the path and the face to be off, so your best defense is to effectively set up your positioning prior to swinging to make certain everything is correct.

Keep your head down.

Placing your chin against your chest as you swing will disrupt your follow-through, especially when you assume that position from the start. Instead, your chin should be straight and lifted from your chest to ensure a solid strike on the ball. Holding your chin up also prevents your arms from being cramped as you swing, as they'll have more space to maneuver.
