The first shot, or tee shot, in golf is arguably the most important one. It sets you up, allowing you to take as few shots as possible to make or stay under par. Learn a few tricks for improving your tee shot and enjoying more success on the green.

How to Increase Tee Shot Accuracy

1. Adjust the Tee Height

A tee that’s too low, such as one that’s a mere inch off the ground, creates driver-ball contact problems. Adjust the height so two-thirds of the golf ball is higher than your driver’s crown.

Next, ensure the ball’s position lines up with your big toe on your front foot. You’ll make more contact with the ball so it moves quickly instead of spinning excessively.

2. Fix Your Grip

golfKeep your wrists flat and use a loose grip to give your swing more energy and open your driver’s face, respectively. A more open driver adds height to the ball. Tighter grips, in contrast, help you hook the ball. Perform a few practice swings before you tee off to make sure your grip feels natural.

3. Avoid Too Much Movement

Focus on relatively controlled swinging instead of allowing your arms to flail around, which can affect your timing. Remain in control by taking your swing back so your front arm is parallel with the ground. Keep weight on the instep of your right or non-front-facing foot as you swing back down to prevent too much hip twisting.

4. Hold Your Head High

Take a tip from Tiger Woods by holding your head up enough so your shoulder turns under your chin when you swing. This helps you turn your shoulders the right amount. Woods notes that if the club “dips” when you come back down, you’re moving your shoulders too much.
