A quality, functioning set of golf clubs is crucial for any player serious about the sport. Your clubs should last for years with care but may need to be replaced at some point. Learn more about when to replace a club in the guide below.

What Determines a Golf Club’s Life Span?

While the marketplace may encourage changing clubs every season, this isn’t necessary for the average player. The life span of a club depends on the frequency of use and how well it’s cared for. Wedges and drivers get the most use but may still last 10 to 20 years. Grooves on a wedge will wear out, or the driver may lose its impact after many rounds on the course and in the driving range. But if you’re happy with your clubs’ performance, there’s usually no need to change.

When Should You Replace a Club?

golf-clubsA club that is visibly worn down should be repaired or replaced, as it will impact your game. As players improve, they will outgrow a set of beginner clubs and will benefit from upgrading to a new set. Different shaft designs and materials are made to match a golfer’s swing speed and strength, for example, which change over time. The entire club may not need to be replaced; a new shaft or head may be adequate.

How to Care for Your Clubs

To get the most mileage out of your golf clubs, take care of them by wiping them down after every use. Remove water, dirt, grass, and sand with a microfiber towel. Use a metal brush for the grooves in the irons, and a plastic bristle brush for the metal clubs. Change the grips once a year to maintain an optimal surface for gripping and swing acceleration. Invest in covers to protect the heads.

To try your clubs out, head to the Waikoloa Village Golf Club.
