Golf clubs may come with high price tags, but they’re investments that will last decades with the right care. Here are a few tips to help you maintain your clubs and avoid premature replacements. Following this guide will also keep your clubs functional, allowing you to enjoy greater success on the green. Here’s what you should be doing.

4 Ways to Maintain Your Golf Clubs

1. Keep Them Clean

Deep clean your clubs after every session on the green to keep particles from scratching the metal. Create a soapy mixture in a bucket or sink using warm water and liquid dish detergent. Submerge the clubs in the mixture for a few minutes to dislodge caked-on grime. Next, use an old toothbrush or groove-cleaning tool to remove dirt from the grooves. Without regular cleaning, your clubs won’t provide the spin you want on different shots.

2. Have a Towel on Hand

golfWipe your clubs with a towel after every stroke to keep dirt, mud, and sand from building up. Excessive mud and grime on your clubs will impact how the ball travels and cause premature wear and corrosion. Attach the towel to your golf bag to help you remember, or ask your caddy to carry it.

3. Inspect Them Regularly

Check your club grips regularly for wear and clean them often with the same soapy mixture to keep sweat and sunblock from accumulating. Dirty grips will slide out of your hands, diminishing your swing. You should also check the club shafts monthly for dents, scratches, and splits. Replace any shaft that’s damaged, as an issue will affect the weight, torque, and other performance elements.

4. Store Them Properly

To prevent corrosion, ensure the clubs are completely dry before storing them and keep them in a dry area. You should also place protective head covers on the putters and wooden clubs. These heads are more delicate than the metal irons, making them vulnerable to dents. Although it may be convenient, avoid leaving the clubs in your vehicle, as the heat will melt the grip glue, and the humidity will encourage oxidation.

If your clubs are kept in pristine condition, they’ll enhance your athletic performance. When you’re ready to hit the green, head to the Waikoloa Village Golf Club on the Big Island. This course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., and it features stunning views of Hawaii’s Kohala coast and volcanoes. To book a tee time, call (808) 883-9621 or make a reservation online.
