If you’re starting to golf, you may be surprised to know that there are several clubs to choose from. Every golf club has a specific advantage and purpose, and when used correctly, they can enhance your game. If you aren’t sure where to start, use this guide to learn about the various types and when to use them.

A Beginner’s Guide to Golf Clubs

1. Woods

These clubs got their name because they were originally made of wood—today, they’re made of metal. Woods are the biggest of the clubs, as they have the largest heads and longest shafts. Due to their size, they’re typically used to make long shots across the green. If you master this club, you’ll be able to hit the ball anywhere from 200 to 350 yards.

2. Wedges

golf clubWedges have angled heads that allow you to get the ball out of tough playing areas, like sand bunkers or thick grass. These clubs are intended to shoot the ball high into the air, so it can land on the regular green.

3. Irons

These club heads are small and thin, giving irons the nickname, blades. They’re numbered one through nine, with the club’s weight increasing, and shaft’s length shortening, as the number climbs higher. Irons are typically used when you need the ball to land less than 200 yards away.

4. Putters

If your ball is near the hole, you’ll likely need a putter to make the shot. Putters help steer the ball where you want it to go, letting it roll and preventing it from skipping. These clubs come in several shapes and sizes, featuring varying shaft lengths and heads shaped like a flat blade or mallet.

If you want to master your clubs, head to the Waikoloa Village Golf Club on the Big Island. This scenic course can be played by golfers of any level, and it features water and sand obstacles, as well as aggressive tee shots. To book a tee time, visit the website or call (808) 883-9621.
