Martial arts classes provide children with exercise and social interaction while teaching them discipline and practical skills. Before their first lesson, there are a few steps to take to ensure your child eases into learning martial arts safely and happily, as the guide below explains.

How to Prepare Children for Martial Arts

1. Choose the Right Class

There are many different forms of martial arts. Start by looking for programs in the area suited to your child's age level. Once you have a list compiled, sit with your child, going over the various styles to see what they'd like bestwhether that's Taekwondo, with its fast kicks, or karate, which focuses more on hand movements.

2. Dress in the Right Gear

Many students do not have their martial arts gi and belt, which is the standard training uniform for the first lesson. Dress them in sweatpants and a t-shirt so that they can move freely. When they get their gi, their instructor will show them how to tie their belt appropriately. You may also want to learn, as well. Additionally, ask the teachers if your child needs other items for class, such as sparring gear or face and teeth guards, before purchasing.

3. Let Them Be Nervous

It is normal to feel nervous about a new endeavor. Therefore, reassure them that other children in the class are also just starting out. The more they attend class and practice, the more their skills will develop, laying a foundation for more advanced techniques. They will also likely make new friends, who will help them come out of their shell more.

4. Share Their Enthusiasm

Kids love knowing that their parents are interested in their hobbies. Some facilities even offer family classes so that you can all work on your martial arts training together. Regardless of whether you want to pursue this option, review the class information and the characteristics of the style so that you can discuss your child's progress with them. When watching them go through the motions, make sure to point out parts of the lesson they did well.
