There are countless martial arts composed of unique movements, disciplines, and philosophies. Tae Kwon Do is one of the most popular and contains a number of sub-styles to explore. Songahm is a highly accessible option for children and adults looking to give self-defense a try.
Origin & Affiliation
Songahm Tae Kwon Do is a core practice of the American Taekwondo Association (ATA). It’s taught at ATA schools and practiced in over 21 countries.
It tailors to various age groups and skill levels and has a tradition dating back to 1954. Eternal Grand Master H.U. founded Songahm Tae Kwon Do first as training for Korean soldiers, and later, for American troops. It was adopted by the ATA when it formed in 1969 and has remained popular since.
Training Focus
Songahm means “Pine Tree and Rock.” These are important symbols in martial arts. The tree represents personal growth; the rock represents endurance and commitment.
Songahm Tae Kwon Do focuses on Poome sae, forms of offense and defensive moves to engage multiple opponents, as well as gyeo-roo-gi (general sparring), and scripted sparring, with a focus on self-defense. Students break boards, learn to use weapons, and more.
Students also focus on developing their minds. They refine their senses to recognize threats and how to neutralize them. Discipline, honor, and courtesy are important aspects of self-development, and Songahm Tae Kwon Do programs are designed to continually reinforce these foundations.
Belt System
Students begin with a white belt and progress through nine ranks to reach black belt. They’ll then achieve degrees 1-9. Degree 6 is a “Master Instructor” designation; degree 7 is a “Senior Master” title; degree 8 is “Chief Master”; and degree 9 is “Grand Master.” This system encourages students to make a life-long practice of this art form and to continually better themselves.
