Getting kids to practice a dental care routine can be tough, but it's important for their oral health. It helps set them up for good habits in the future and prevents frequent trips to the dentist. However, some children can neglect to brush their teeth or do it correctly. If you suspect this is the case with your little one, here's what to look out for.

How to Tell if Your Kids Aren't Brushing

1. Bad Breath

A common sign that your child isn't brushing their teeth is if they have bad breath. When they don't practice proper dental care, food remains in their mouth. As a result, bacteria accumulate and lead to foul odors. To address this issue, monitor your kid to ensure they brush their teeth twice a day. However, if bad breath continues to be a problem, it can be due to other underlying issues, such as tooth decay or gum disease.

2. White Tongue

If you notice that your kid has a white patch on their tongue, pay attention to their oral hygiene habits. When bacteria, dead cells, and food remain in the mouth after eating, they get trapped in the tongue's tiny bumps, known as papillae. They swell and turn white once this occurs.

Besides having your child brush their teeth regularly, you should also teach them to clean their tongue. Show them how to use a scraper and let them know that this dental care habit helps remove any particles that can cause cavities.

3. Food Stuck in Teeth

Dental issues primarily arise due to unattended particles stuck between teeth. When your child finishes brushing, look closely at their smile to inspect whether there's any food remaining. If there is, they're not taking the time to clean their teeth properly. Teach them to do it for at least two minutes, spending 30 seconds dedicated to each quadrant.

When examining their teeth, you can also look for plaque buildup. While the substance is typically colorless, it sometimes appears as a pale yellow patch.
