Home insulation acts like a blanket for your house, keeping warmth contained and the cold weather outside. These days, there are multiple materials on the market to perform this function. To help you decide which might be right for your needs, here’s an overview of a few of the most common options.

Which Materials Provide Home Insulation?

1. Fiberglass Batts

Sold in puffy, pre-cut sheets, fiberglass insulation can be stacked horizontally or vertically in crawlspaces or attics.

Once applied, it has an insulating power of around R-13. It’s affordable and resistant to moisture, but since Vermont requires higher insulating power, it’s not as effective as other materials.

2. Spray Foam

insulationThis product is sprayed by hand and expands to fit the area that is being insulated. Once applied, it will stay in place until you remove it.

The product is paintable and can be cut out of place if you need to replace or alter it. With an insulating power of around R-30, the high-density form of this material is one of the most effective insulators and prevents air and moisture infiltration.

3. Loose-Fill Cellulose

This is an effective option when you need to fill large, irregularly shaped spaces, such as attics. Made from recycled paper, loose cellulose insulation expands to fill every nook and cranny of a room. The material is typically chemically treated with borates to prevent fire and pest damage. It can provide insulating power of over R-38 for an attic.
