In the average home, the cost of running the AC unit usually accounts for the largest portion of your power bill. Reducing your need for air conditioning is an effective way to save money and be more environmentally friendly. Aside from turning up the thermostat, here are a few ways to cut back on an air conditioner’s energy use.

How Can Your AC Unit Use Less Electricity?

1. Generate Less Heat Indoors

Many of the appliances in the home, such as the stove and dryer, generate heat. Try replacing cooked meals with fresh salads and sandwiches during warmer weather, and dry your clothing on a clothesline if possible. Also, make an effort to cut back on long showers, which fill the air with warm steam. Close your curtains or apply a film that blocks UV rays to your windows to keep the sun from heating your home.

2. Improve Your Home’s Insulation

The more effective insulation is, the longer it will take for the heat outdoors to seep inside. As a result, your AC unit won’t have to run as long to maintain the same indoor temperature. Windows are often weak points for insulation, so install double-paned windows that prevent heat transfer or add heavy curtains to them. If possible, locate the source of drafts and seal the area with caulk or apply weather stripping to doors and windows. Finally, have the insulation in your walls and attic tested to make sure it’s still effective.

3. Tune Your AC Unit

An air conditioner is full of interconnected parts. When these parts are tuned up and working together, your AC unit is more efficient and uses less electricity. For instance, a balanced fan and a clean air filter allow air to pass through the system easily, so the fan won’t have to draw as much power. Schedule professional maintenance from an HVAC contractor at least once a year to keep your air conditioner running efficiently. If the AC unit is more than 10 years old or breaks down frequently, consider replacing it with a newer, more energy-efficient model.
