Fire alarm systems are required in homes to keep property and residents safe. Having functioning smoke detectors and alarms protects your family in case of an emergency, but these need to be maintained throughout the year to stay operational. Here are a few ways to keep these devices in working order.

How to Maintain a Home’s Fire Alarm System

1. Dust & Vacuum

When dust accumulates, it can affect how well the alarm detects smoke. Wipe off the unit and the area around it annually.

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning inside the device. You can usually do this with vacuum attachments.

2. Check the Batteries

While you swap them, look at the connections and make sure nothing is broken or corroded. If there is damage, replace the entire device.

3. Test Regularly

Run a monthly test by pressing the test button on the unit. If the alarm goes off, you know that the batteries and sensors are working. If the device doesn’t ring, schedule maintenance.

Alternatively, blow out a candle near the unit and let the smoke trigger the alarm to test its efficacy.

4. Replace Older Models

Over time, the electrical components of fire alarms wear down, so you need to have them replaced. Install new alarms every 10 years.

When you move into a new home with alarms in place, upgrade to new devices if you don’t know the age of the existing ones.
