Eyelash extensions make your lashes appear fuller, longer, and darker. Before you head to the medical spa for this procedure, it’s wise to learn all you can about it. Here are answers to some of the most common questions about eyelash extensions.

A Guide to Eyelash Extensions

What is the process like?

When you arrive at the medical spa, you’ll sit in a comfortable chair and be asked to close your eyes. A technician will then apply an adhesive to an eyelash extension and place the extension on top of one of your natural lashes. The technician will then repeat this process until the procedure is completed.

How long does the process take?

medical spaIt usually takes about two hours to apply a full set. However, you can opt for a half set of lashes if you prefer a more natural look. Half sets are typically applied to your outer edge lashes to enhance their beauty, while full sets are applied to all the lashes for a more dramatic look.

How long do the extensions last?

Natural lashes fall out and regrow on a cycle of about six to eight weeks. Because extensions are attached to the natural lashes, they’ll fall out when your natural lashes do. You can then return to your technician for reapplication.

If you really want to maintain a full look, however, you can get touch-ups every three to four weeks instead of waiting for the extensions to fall out.

How do I take care of them?

In the first 24 hours after getting eyelash extensions, avoid showering, swimming, or otherwise exposing your lashes to water. During this period, water can break the adhesive bond and make the extensions fall out. Avoid wearing mascara, because when you take it off, you could accidentally remove the extensions as well. If you must wear mascara, apply it very lightly to only the tips of the extensions.

Prevent your extensions from getting tangled by softly brushing the lashes with a spoolie brush at the end of each day and after waking or showering. Also, avoid sleeping on your stomach, as this position increases the risk of tangling while you sleep. Use gentle facial cleansers designed for sensitive eyes, and gently remove eye makeup with oil-free pads in a downward motion. Never rub or tug at your eyes.
