With extreme temperatures approaching this summer, are you prepared to keep your pet from overheating? The highly trained veterinarians at Mililani Town Center Pet Clinic provide expert pet care for dogs and cats across Oahu, and offer tips to keep your furry friends cool this summer.

These Mililani veterinarians discuss a few pet care tips for keeping your feline or canine friend safe in the summer heat:

  • Take Morning Walks: Temperatures are usually coolest in the early morning. If you're a dog owner, take your dog outside during this time to help both of you avoid heat exhaustion.
  • Bring Plenty Of Water: Whenever you take your dog outside, bring a dish and cold water with you to make sure your pet stays hydrated. If possible, carry a spray bottle with water in it to regularly “mist” you dog, keeping them cool from the summer sun.

  • Give Extra Attention To The Short-Nosed: Flat-faced breeds, such as pug dogs and Persian cats, have a harder time breathing in hot air. Give them extra attention while outside, and quickly bring them inside or into the shade should their breathing quicken.
  • Don't Shear Fur: The fur coat on your cat or dog actually helps keep them cool. If your pet has very long or matted fur, it is okay to have a dog groomer provide a summer trim to help with ventilation.
  • Don't Leave Animals In The Car: Never, under any circumstances, leave a pet unattended in a car in temperatures even as low as 70 degrees. Even with the windows cracked, in-car temperatures can escalate fiendishly in only a few minutes.
