The history of coffee in Hawaii predates statehood. Don Francisco de Paula Marin imported the first coffee plants in 1817. While his attempts were unsuccessful, they marked the beginning of a movement on the islands. The first commercial crop was planted in 1836 on Kaui, beginning Hawaii's long, successful history of coffee production. 

2. There Are Nearly 800 Coffee Farms

From its small beginnings, the industry has grown to around 780 farms around the islands. Many of them are small producers and are concentrated in the Kona district; there are 650 farms in this area alone. As such, the bulk of coffee produced is Kona coffee, but there are also international types grown, including Bourbon, Caturra, and Gesha. Many of these coffee farms are available to tour and offer tastings of their unique products.
