Learning proper gun safety techniques is essential to ensure you have the confidence needed to make the most of this new hobby and reduce the risk of injury. However, for those who just received their first gun, knowing where to start may be challenging. Put your mind at ease by considering the following.

What Gun Safety Practices Should You Practice?

1. Ensure Quality Storage

Quality gun storage keeps your family safe, reducing the risk of accidental injury and ensuring the weapon doesn't get into the wrong hands. Additionally, the gun is your responsibility, so putting it in a safe place will provide peace of mind.

Gun safes are the best option, featuring complicated locking mechanisms that only open with specific codes. If you don't currently have one, store your unloaded gun on top of a wardrobe or along a corner shelf in a closet to keep it well out of reach.

2. Review Local Laws

Every area has different regulations when it comes to firing and handling guns. Knowing the basics will prevent misunderstandings and reduce the risk of endangerment.

New Hampshire is a "shall issue" state, which means they don't require gun owners to have licenses but will accept applicants who have reasons to carry, such as hunting or target shooting. You'll have to renew this license every five years. Additionally, if you're traveling between states with the gun, make sure to unload it and place it in a locked case.

3. Clean & Inspect It

Guns usually arrive with thick coats of preservative grease along the inside of the barrels. Cleaning this area will ready the weapon for use and prevent misfiring.
A standard tool for this task is a bore brush, which features stiff bristles that fit neatly into the barrel. Coating this with solvent will help loosen the residue and produce a quality clean. For other parts of the gun, use a nylon brush to prevent scratches.

4. Practice Each Feature

Take time to become familiar with the gun while it's unloaded, making sure it's comfortable to hold and is a manageable weight. Go through the controls, side lock, magazine release, and safeties several times to ensure you know how they function.

5. Get Some Training

Once you feel confident handling the firearm, take it outdoors for some test shots. Work with someone who has fired a gun before, such as a relative or instructor at the firing range. They'll show you how to properly load the gun and line up the shot while remaining aware of your surroundings.
