You can count on your heating system to keep you warm and comfortable during the coldest months of the year. As with any appliance, however, it will eventually begin to show signs of wear and tear. In some cases, it can be difficult to tell when it’s time to replace your furnace. Below are three signs that you should replace your unit so that you can avoid an unexpected mid-season breakdown.

When to Replace Your Furnace

1. Simple Aging

The average furnace has a lifespan of approximately 15 to 25 years, assuming it receives regular care and maintenance as it ages. Once it reaches that point, however, you’re likely to notice that it doesn’t work quite as efficiently as it once did. Since old heating systems aren’t necessarily designed to meet the needs of the modern home, you may also notice that your energy bills are considerably higher than they once were. Energy-efficient models have higher annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) ratings. This value refers to how well the device uses fuel to create heat. Higher numbers equate to greater efficiency.

2. Frequent Repairs

It could be that the pilot light on an aging unit consistently goes dark, or that the filter has been clogged for so long that the furnace has simply burned out and slowly reached the end of its useful life. Usually, these problems develop after years without maintenance appointments, so it’s critical to prioritize regular inspections with an HVAC contractor. Otherwise, you may put the life of the appliance at risk.

3. Weak Airflow

Sometimes poor heating can be the result of vents that are covered by furniture or area rugs. You should inspect the home thoroughly first to make sure that this isn’t the cause of your discomfort. But if there still isn’t adequate heat flowing through the rooms, it could be that there’s a mechanical issue with the air handler, or that the furnace simply isn’t delivering heat evenly throughout the home.
