Most homeowners expect energy bills to rise during colder months. However, if you’re experiencing higher-than-usual costs, there may be a mystery to solve. Your home could be leaking warm air, or you may not have enough control over how your furnace or heat pump operates. Here are three ways to cut heating costs this season.

How to Save Money on Your Heating Bill

1. Use a Smart Thermostat

Turning down the heater before you leave the house in the morning or cozy up in bed at night can significantly reduce your energy costs over time. However, it’s easy to forget to adjust the thermostat, and you don't want to come back home to a chilly house.

Luckily, a smart thermostat can adjust the temperature based on a predetermined schedule. Since it's connected to the home's Wi-Fi, you can even use an app on your phone to adjust the HVAC system while you're at work. Whether there are unexpected weather changes or you want to pinpoint the temperature that will be waiting for you, you'll have complete control.

2. Seal Cracks & Holes

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), air leaks account for about 25% to 40% of the average home's energy costs. These leaks can occur because of cracks, holes, or loose connections in the ductwork. Have an HVAC professional examine the ducts to assess the condition of the sealing.

A significant amount of air can also leak through the spaces around windows and doors. Replace old, cracked weatherstripping and caulking in these areas to solve the problem.

3. Insulate the Attic & Roof

Heat can also escape through the attic if it’s not insulated. If full attic insulation isn’t feasible for you, insulate the door only by installing self-adhesive weatherstripping around it to prevent air transfer. You can also adhere or nail a piece of fiberglass or rigid foam board to the back of the attic door or hatch.

Because heat rises, it can escape through the roof that's in poor shape. The average life span of a roofing system depends on its material, environment, and maintenance, but most last about 20 years. Have your roof inspected once a year to ensure it's not damaged or contributing to energy waste.
