If you are planning to list your home for sale, there are several steps you can take to help it sell quickly. You want to make changes that help buyers easily picture themselves in the property. Besides removing personal effects, re-painting the interior creates a neutral palette that helps buyers envision their belongings in the space while making a great impression during showings. Your Realtor® can offer advice about the best practices for staging your home, but here are a few smart paint colors to get you started.

How Should I Paint my House When Selling?

1. Beige & Gray

Neutrals work best for communal areas of the home, such as the living and dining rooms. If you're not a fan of beige, "greige" is a combination of beige and gray that tends to be a bit warmer and more inviting. Tan is another good alternative to traditional beige, as it maintains a neutral style while also creating some visual interest in the room.

2. White & Cream

It might be tempting to paint the kitchen all white, but keep in mind that stark white is not very forgiving for stains and defects. Instead, choosing a creamy off-white shade offers a neutral yet upbeat style, and you can add color to the space with accents. For example, a cream-colored kitchen will be nicely offset by pale yellow crown molding.

3. Darker Neutrals

Many realtors recommend painting bedrooms with the same shades as the rest of the home. However, darker neutrals work well in master bedrooms, which are often quite sizable. You can also opt for a blue-gray shade to create a lighter, airier space in the room.

4. Calming Colors

Pale blue or light green are great selections for the bathroom, as they create a serene and relaxing atmosphere. If the room receives a lot of natural light, pale yellow shades will emphasize it. If your bathroom is small, using a few shades lighter than other areas of the home will help open up the space.
