Your family relies on the furnace to keep the house comfortable during the winter. If this appliance is having trouble and the indoor temperature starts to drop, troubleshoot the issue so you can have it repaired as quickly as possible. Knowing a few of the most common problems these systems experience can help you outline the problem to an HVAC contractor. Here’s what you should know.

A Troubleshooting Guide for Your Furnace

1. Thermostat

The thermostat is the control center for the heat, so any issues will often stop a perfectly good system from running. Fortunately, problems with this component are common and usually easy to fix on your own.

Check that the thermostat has power, and consider whether you need to change its batteries. Ensure the setting is switched to the “heat” function, as well. This change should be adjusted at the beginning of the season. If these quick fixes don’t remedy the problem, call a technician for help.

2. Pilot Light

The pilot light is the small flame responsible for igniting the gas that turns on the heat. This should always be lit because, without it, the device will not distribute any warmth. If you have a gas system, the pilot light is usually near the bottom of the furnace.

furnaceIf you feel comfortable with it, turn the gas valve off and wait five minutes to let any lingering fumes dissipate. Hold a lighter to the opening while you turn the knob back to the “pilot” setting. When it catches, turn it to the “on” position. Call a professional if you aren’t comfortable with the task, if the flame keeps going out, or if you have an electric furnace with malfunctioning burners.

3. Heat Exchanger

The exchanger is responsible for transferring heat from the combustion chamber to the outside of the unit. The component can get stressed and crack if a clogged filter is limiting the airflow. This results in a significant heat loss, soot on the inside of the furnace, or water on the floor around the device.

The crack can also leak carbon monoxide—a harmful gas byproduct of combustion—into your home. Turn off the system immediately, and call a professional if you suspect this may be the problem. Open the windows and take your family outdoors if anyone exhibits the signs of carbon monoxide poisoning, including nausea, flu-like symptoms, headaches, and eye irritation.
