In industrial properties, loading docks allow for quick and convenient transfer of supplies and inventory. However, due to the coming and going of heavy-duty vehicles, these areas can be a hazard for your employees. Luckily, you can enhance the safety of your dock by putting the following tips into practice.

How to Improve the Safety of Your Loading Dock

1. Ensure Seamless Communication

Although accidents are bound to happen occasionally, many can be avoided by implementing communication systems. A red-green traffic light can indicate when it’s safe for a truck driver to pull in. Even a system of simple hand motions can be practiced to communicate nonverbally between drivers and dock personnel.

2. Block Off Unsafe Sections

If you can’t physically block off these spaces, use colored tape to define off-limits areas. Don’t forget to include the meaning of this tape color in your safety training sessions.

3. Protect Against Slip & Falls

Whether a shipment of frozen fish breaks open or the mop water hasn’t dried yet, loading docks are also a common site for slip and fall accidents. To prevent injuries, limit moisture after cleaning by using industrial-grade fans. If any sharp edges are protruding from the dock, wrap them with padding and ensure the material firmly adheres to the surface.
