The development of electrical automation has made it so that electrical processes—ranging from the lights to the HVAC—can all be controlled from one place. From there, power usage can be monitored and adjusted to maximize efficiency while reducing energy costs. However, these set-ups aren’t completely infallible. The guide below explores a few possible problems your system might run into.

Troubleshooting Electrical Automation Issues

1. Lost Connections

Electrical automation systems can lose connections to linked components. In this situation, it might initiate fail-safe mode. Equipment must be run manually while the system’s fail-safe is in effect. After your electrical contractor has fixed the problem, make sure the building operator or facility manager returns the equipment to automatic mode.

2. Power Problems

If you are experiencing power problems, your equipment may begin faltering or failing altogether. A recent building or system upgrade most often causes this. Your old power supply could be overloaded or new equipment might be creating imbalances in the power supply. To determine the cause, use a power quality analyzer to measure electrical parameters like power, voltage, current, harmonics, energy, and frequency.

3. Failing Sensor or Actuator

A sensor or actuator can electrical automationfail for many reasons. It could be due to physical damage, overuse, or the standard wear and tear of old age. Problems with communication cabling or downstream devices can also cause issues for sensors and actuators. If the issue lies with the sensor, use a separate measurement device to check the accuracy of the reading. For example, you might compare the readings from a handheld micromanometer to that of your equipment’s pressure gauge.

4. System Overrides

The settings on an electrical automation system are intentionally set to ensure optimal efficiency based on a facility’s size, age, location, and occupancy times. If someone in the building overrides a certain setting without changing it back, it could start to affect the efficiency of your system.

Overrides should be kept to a minimum. Some systems allow you to implement a feature that automatically reverts to your original settings after a certain period or set up a PIN or password control on user access to overrides.
