Though the swimming season lasts longer in the South, there will still come a day when it's time to prepare your pool for the winter. This helps prevent damage from frosty temperatures and other elements. However, many homeowners wait a little too long to tend to theirs, ending up with maintenance issues and extra work when they open them the following year. If a pool builder finished a custom installation at your home earlier this year, it's natural to be curious about getting the timing right at the end of this first summer. The following factors are good signs that you should treat and cover your pool for the year.

When Should You Close Your Swimming Pool This Fall?

1. Temperature Drops Below 65 Degrees Fahrenheit

Algae growth starts when the chlorine residue level drops due to warm temperatures. As a result, closing the pool earlier can increase the chance of algae buildup. A good target is when the daytime highs begin to drop below 65 degrees consistently, as you'll avoid using up the last of the chlorine residue. Although algae growth stops at the 40-degree mark, closing when the temperature dips below 65 during the afternoon ensures the chlorine residue lasts until the following year.

First, add chemicals like phosphate remover to keep the algae level at a minimum. Next, shock and chlorinate the water with a 1-pound-to-10,000-gallon ratio. Wait for the chlorine level to range between 1 to 3 ppm before closing the pool.

2. It's Seldom Used

It's natural for the family to stop swimming due to cold and uncomfortable conditions during the fall. Although pool builders can add a water heater, most homeowners opt not to have one, which makes swimming difficult to enjoy.

As you prepare for the end of the swimming season, run the pump for at least 12 hours to maintain clear water for a few weeks. This helps to avoid the cleaning cost, which can be more expensive than keeping the water feature open for a few more weeks.

3. Debris Is Falling

Beautiful landscaping and trees can be a problem for pools, as falling leaves and blown debris can decompose. As a result, many homeowners find cleaning a difficult task to complete. If you have trees around the swimming area, consider closing and covering the pool to avoid staining the floor when the debris settles and decays.

However, if it’s too early to close, use a safety cover to prevent dead plant materials from falling directly into the water. Then, close it once the weather reaches optimal temperatures.
