Gardening is a fun, low-impact physical activity. It also fills your backyard with beautiful plants and flowers for the whole neighborhood to enjoy. Despite these benefits, you must take certain precautions to protect your skin from excess sun exposure and other hazards. Here are a few simple ways you can look after yourself while also indulging in a hobby you love.

How Should You Protect Your Skin When Gardening?

1. Always Wear Sunscreen

Sunscreen is essential for warding off damaging UV rays. It should be worn even on overcast days, as UV rays are capable of filtering through the clouds and causing sunburn. When looking for a brand, choose one that has an SPF of 30 or higher. The kind you choose should also offer broad-spectrum protection, meaning it safeguards your skin against UVA and UVB rays. You should reapply the solution every two hours or so, especially if you're working up a sweat.

2. Refrain From Wearing Pungent Perfumes & Lotions

Insects are often attracted to strong smells, like perfume, lotions, and other cosmetics. Avoid these products when tending to your plants. You can also use insect repellents for advanced protection. Just be sure to follow the instructions on the bottle. Citronella candles are another good option, as they can be set up around the perimeter where you're working.

3. Wear Gloves & Long Sleeves

Thorny plants irritate the skin when touched, but gloves can prevent your fingers from being pricked. The same is true of long sleeves, which protect your arms from injuries. Proper coverage is crucial if you're prone to outdoor allergies, as it's likely pollen and other allergens will get on your skin when gardening. When you're finished for the day, remove your clothing and immediately wash it separately from other laundry to get rid of allergens.
